Doug Brinks

Hello, my name is Doug. I'm a woodturner. I hand turn all my art on a wood lathe. Some of these will also have some hand carving, usually to create feet or legs on a piece. Much of the wood I use are burls that I find locally. I like the idea that you don’t have to acquire exotic wood from around the world to make a beautiful piece of art. Most of my art has natural edges exposed. I like to see a piece of art that transforms from the rough exterior to the smooth finished inner beauty.

I’m deeply involved with the Grand River Woodturners Guild in Grand Rapids where I serve as president. In 2014 I became a volunteer at the Grand Rapids Public Museum doing woodturning demonstrations on their 1905 wood lathe. I have also done wood turning demonstrations for the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo chapters of the American Woodturners Association. I especially enjoy mentoring and teaching the art of woodturning to others.
