Charles is a Michigan native, who grew up in South Haven and moved to Grand Rapids to attend the Kendall College of Art and Design, where he graduated with an Illustration major. Much of the inspiration for his art is drawn from areas around the Great Lakes State.
He had done freelance illustration and design work, and other commercial artwork, before turning to fine arts painting. This transition was triggered by becoming more keenly aware of the aesthetic components of painting: light and shadow patterns, juxtaposed shapes, chromatic contrast, and, most of all, color.
Charles maintains a large studio in a SW side Grand Rapids warehouse. His work is in private, public, and corporate collections. He does contract art teaching as well as gives private lessons, and is a tutor and mentor.
He is deeply interested in visual perception and this informs his own painting methodology. He works on both panel and canvas, using alkyd fast-drying oils and flat brushes.
Over time his architectonic and geometrized technique has softened into a more organic look, but Charles still employs the mental approach of assembling his pictures from discrete, colored units of pigment, in a craftsman- like way.
Charles does between 6 and 10 art shows a year as well as competitions and Open Studio events by appointment. He has also twice been an art show judge, is a committee member of the South Haven Center for the Arts and has been an active Board and regular member of several art organizations.
